Van Buren County was created on November 11, 1833 and was formed from Independence County, Clark County and Izard County. Parts of Van Buren County was used to form the following counties: Cleburne 1883, Stone 1873. Other county boundry changes occured when Boundaries defined 14 November 1836, part annexed to Pope County on 12 January 1853, lines with Searcy and Marion defined 20 January 1855, line with Pope County defined 17 February 1859. This particular county was named in honor of Martin Van Buren (1782–1862), eighth president of the United States.
